Passing Through, Final Version

This is a plein air painting that I made during Evanston's first-ever Plein Air Fest, in the summer of 2022. It is a scene of a man riding his bike on Dempster Street, headed East. He was passing through an underpass and in front of a colorful mural. I was intrigued by conveying the act of motion, so I blurred the edges of the biker. The composition is somewhat abstract as he merges with the geometric shapes on the wall behind him. The dappled light that breaks over the walls creates a dramatic, impressionistic effect. I stretched this heavyweight canvas myself over strong and level stretcher bars that project out from the wall by one and a half inches.
