"Beach at Normandy" by Katherine Orr

This image is from a photo taken several years ago on the beach in Normandy with the windswept sea, sand and sky overshadowing the people walking along the shore.  The backstory is that my father-in-law crossed the English Channel in a gasoline barge the day after D-Day (D + 1), landing on this very beach and living in a foxhole during the battles in France.  I used washes of ink, watercolor and broux de noix (walnut stain from France, appropriately!) on paper to recreate the scene and the mood of quiet contemplation. It's framed in a simple black frame with a white mat, 14 in. x 18 in.
