The Polyrhythm Series by Rob Larson explores the musicality of color in repeated structures.
I initially started with one large design in blue and white. I was concerned with positive and negative shapes that were balanced and interchangeable as the structure moved around the canvas. I then began to layer transparent horizontal strokes over the top to create a united and strong presence in radiant blue. I was surprised by the horizontal lines that emerged and fluctuated based on the underlying structure. This reminded me of musical notes and so I finished the painting with incorporating some painterly drips that expressed the joy of being in the present moment. I was listening to John Coltrane's Blue Train when I created this painting.
This painting is signed, dated and titled by the artist on the back of the canvas. The sides of the painting are black and artwork comes wired and ready to hang.
