From the Urban Cityscapes Series
Size: 10" h by 20" w by 1" deep
I was inspired by colorful umbrellas at a hot dog stand. Specifically, I was intrigued by the abstract geometric shapes and the primary colors that made up the scene. I painted quickly and loosely to convey energetic brush strokes. I began by toning the canvas with an underpainting of burnt sienna, a warm earthy hue. Then I worked mainly with burnt umber, ultramarine blue and white to focus mainly on the design and patterns of shadow. Finally, I glazed the remaining colors on top. Thus, the value structure and geometric composition remains intact. The repetition of the shapes and forms creates a gridded rhythm, which moves energetically through the picture plane.
