Coded Pattern explores the intersection of language, information, and ritual. A code is a form of shorthand that must be interpreted and deciphered. A pattern infers a repeated element such as a movement, shape, or duplicated object. In this painting, I am referencing elements found within a pattern that would be used to program a loom. The square block is a stand-in for a thread. The red areas, for example, might inform the weaver how to thread the loom while the blue areas would tell the weaver how to lift the threads. The squares can turn into rectangles as multiple threads can be combined into groups that are lifted simultaneously. The pattern that emerges is one that is pixelated, abstracted and becomes a bit distorted through the use of color. The symmetry begins to dissolve at the bottom portion of the painting as the red is substituted with gray. These slight variants introduced into the pattern are ways that I am conjuring disruption within a repeated action that can at first seem predictable, expected, until it isn’t.
