"Plein Air painting refers to the practice of painting entirely outdoors directly from a live subject, rather than working from photographs or memory inside a studio. Derived from the French phrase "en plein air", which translates literally to "in the open air," this method became a defining pillar of 19th-century French Impressionism. Because the outdoor environment introduces rapidly changing weather, shifting shadows, and fleeting natural light, plein air artists must work with a high degree of speed and spontaneity. This intense, real-time constraint typically results in loose, vibrant, and energetic brushstrokes that prioritize the true sensory reality and atmosphere of a landscape over meticulously rendered studio details. Although uncommon, the artist may approach each piece with final touches in the studio for the finished work".
